How do I position a backup camera? Can I just stick a backup camera anywhere? What direction should the camera face? Do I just plug this thing in and go?

If you're an individual or a fleet who has purchased a backup camera system or plans on purchasing one, you might have those questions.

Relax! We've got some universal tips to remember--no matter your system's make or model!

Before you even begin the purchasing journey, remember that transmission signal interference can be an issue with wireless backup camera systems, so go with a wired system if your trailer is made from aluminum. Also, note that wireless just refers to the connection between the monitor and camera, not their power sources-- that is, both individual components must be powered!

With that said, here are 7 tips to keep in mind when installing your backup camera system:

1) When installing cameras on the outside of a vehicle, make sure the product description clearly states that it’s waterproof. Go one step further and know the IP rating, which will tell you exactly how waterproof it is. Here's a quick primer on those ratings.

2) For large semi-trailers: Always avoid mounting rear cameras above a light to avoid washing out the camera’s view. Aim for a spot in between existing lights, preferably between the center light and the light directly to its right or left.

3) Avoid installing side cameras near air vents on step vans, trucks, and other commercial vehicles.

4) Side cameras usually need to be installed at an angle of 8°, and this needs to be set before drilling the holes. Once determined, mark the hole locations before drilling.

5) Use cameras within the voltage range specified. Failure to do so can cause electric shock or product malfunction.

6) Where the power cable may touch a metal case, cover the cable with friction tape. A short circuit or disconnected wire may cause a fire.

7) Once the system is powered up, you will need to adjust the angle of the camera.

Finalize your installation by ensuring that all side and backup cameras are capturing images, are properly attached, and functioning when you turn, reverse, and press your brakes. Safe driving!
