Tales of the Road | How to Keep Your Child Safe
Tales of the Road, a leading road safety organization based in the United Kingdom, has recently released a series of three videos containing safety tips for children that are designed to help curb the number of traffic related fatalities that happen across the country each year.
When people think about road safety, it's natural for them to look inward at the steps that they should be taking to help make the roads as safe as possible for everyone around them. Far too many people fail to pay attention to their vulnerable children, as they are the ones that don't have an active role in the relationship between a driver and his or her automobile. Yet it is these children who often pay the price for the negligence of others, which is something that needs to stop as soon as possible.
The three videos, titled "Make Me Cross," "Lighten Up" and "Street Smarts," are part video and part educational game, teaching children of all ages both what to look out for when they interact with the world around them and the consequences of failing to do so in the first place. "Make Me Cross," for example, allows kids to take control of a young boy as he searches for an opportunity to cross the road. It teaches the importance of stopping before you cross, looking for any potential obstacles and listening for certain dangers that you may not be able to see but that are present anyway.
"Lighten Up" is a similar game with a very different message: it teaches kids the importance of dressing brightly in clothing that can be seen just as easily at night as it can be during the day, allowing them to be clearly seen by drivers even in dark or dimly lit areas. "Street Smarts," the final video/game in the series, teaches the importance of looking for the safest possible place to cross the road before attempting to do so. This is important because certain areas naturally have low visibility as far as drivers are concerned (like around a bend, for example), making the likelihood of an accidental crash much higher.
These road safety for children videos from Tales of the Road, along with other child safety resources by this and other leading organizations, are playing a very important role in education regarding children and vehicles in general. By taking the time to educate your child about the potential dangers that they face every time they don't look both ways before crossing or fail to use common sense in general, we can all do our part to help curb what is quickly becoming an epidemic worldwide.
